The following are probably worth emphasising:
- For many non-manual jobs you will be asked to make a written application
- You will have to prove you are entitled to work in the UK
- Usually this will be by providing a National Insurance Number (NINO)
- For jobs involving money, children, data or patients, you will need to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB check)
- If you are in such work, you will have to declare any criminal convictions
- In many less critical areas an old and non-serious conviction should not stop you getting work
- You should expect checks with previous employers and health checks, and perhaps personality profiling (but in the UK handwriting analysis is rare!)
- If you cannot easily get paid work, unpaid work in the community (also known as voluntary work) can be very rewarding and bring useful contacts including employers!
- You will have to take a number of items to interviews, and we have provided a list of things that an employer might expect to see
- There are many ways into work but Jobcentre Plus is the key government agency to help you
